Question
Describe the procedures for the hot process, anodising and plating methods outlined below when used for finishing on different given components: What effect will these processes have on the finished component, surface finish and hardness? Outline key health and safety considerations of each process. For hot process the component is made from steel dipped in molten tin For anodisina the component is an aluminium window frame. Also describe how colour is added in the process. For plating the component is zinc plated.Explanation / Answer
Solution.
1) The tin provides a nontoxic, ductile and corrosion-resistant protective coating. Tin vapor is an irritant to the eyes and skin. Medical surveillance should focus on eyes and skin.
2) Anodizing of aluminium produces a very thick oxide coating with improved physical properties (resistance to marine and atmospheric corrosion, abrazion). The color may vary from pale yellow to bronze.
3) Plating is electrodeposition of zinc on a surface. This coating prevents oxidation acting as a sacrificial anode. Workers at electroplating workplaces may be exposed to hazardous chemicals in the form of fumes, vapours, mists, metal dusts, electrolytic solutions, solvents, heavy metals and toxic wastes. Exposure to chemical hazards may cause short and/or long term health problems including skin and eye irritation, burns, asthma/breathing problems, nerve disorders, and in some cases, cancer.
