Question

For the reaction 2A + 3B rightarrow 4C + 5D. the rate of the reaction in terms of Delta B would be written as - Delta B / Delta t -3 Delta B / Delta T -1/2 Delta B / Delta t -2 Delta B / Delta t -1/3 Delta B / Delta t Which of the following docs the initial rate of a chemical reaction does not depend on? Concentration of products Concentration of reactants Temperature I lll Both I and III Both II and III I, II, and III The reaction A + 2B rightarrow C Is first order in A and second order in B. The overall order of the reaction is first. second. third. fourth. fifth. In a rate law, the partial orders are determined by the stoichiometric coefficients. experiment. the product concentrations. the reactant concentrations. the difference between the forward and reverse rates. Carbonyl chloride gas (COCI_2) is produced from carbon monoxide and chlorine gas according to the following reaction: CO(g) + Cl_2(g) rightarrow COCl(g) If the rate of production of CO and CI_2 respectively? -R(CO) = R(COCl_2); -R(Cl_2) = R(COCl_2) -R(CO) =1/2 R(COCl_2); -R(Cl_2) = 1/2 R(COCl_2) -R(CO) = 1/2 R(COCl_2); -R(Cl_2) = R(COCl_2) -R(CO) = R(COCl_2); -R(Cl_2) = 1/2 R(COCl_2) -R(CO) = 2 R(COCl_2); -R(Cl_2) = 1/2 R(COCl_2) In the combustion of ethane, 2 C_2 H_6(g) + 7 O_2(g) rightarrow 4 CO_2(g) + 6 H_2O (g), which reactant has the greatest rate of disappearance? C_2H_6 O_2 H_2O CO_2 C_2H_6 and O_2 have the same rate of disappearance.

Explanation / Answer

1) In the given reaction B is reactant and as reaction proceeds its concentration decreases. Hence the rate of reaction in terms of delta B is given as -1/3 x (deltaB/delta t)

2) Initial rate of raction doesnot depends on concentration of product as it will be in very low concentration initially.

3) The power to which the concentration of the species is raised in the rate law is called as order of that reaction w.r.t. that species. The overall order of reaction is the sume of such individual orders and hence here the ovrall order of reaction will be 1+2 = 3. Hence the given reaction is Third order reaction.

4) In a rate law partial orders are determined by the Stoichometric coefficients of reacting species.

5) Given chemical eq. CO + Cl2 ------> COCl2

Hence using rate law we have,

R(COCl2) = [COCl2]........i

R(Cl2) = - [Cl2] ................ii

R(CO) = -[CO].................iii

So, R(COCl) = -R(Cl2) = -R (CO).

i.e -R(CO) = R(COCl2) and -R(Cl2) = R(COCl2) option A.

6) In this reaction C2H6 and O2 are reactants and the disappearane of there concentration follows rate law as,

R(C2H6) = -1/2 [C2H6] and R(O2) = -1/7 [O2]

considering magnitude of coefficients i.e. 1/2 and 1/7 we have 1/2 > 1/7

Hence the species with 1/2 coefficient in rate law disappearce fastre than one with 1/7

i.e.C2H6 disappearce faster in the given reaction.
