Question

Part A

Calculate the mass percent (m/m) of a solution prepared by dissolving 52.18 g of NaCl in 152.8 g of H2O.

Express your answer to four significant figures.

Part B
Vinegar is a solution of acetic acid in water. If a 185 mL bottle of distilled vinegar contains 26.5 mL of acetic acid, what is the volume percent (v/v) of the solution?
Express your answer to three significant figures.

Part C
Calculate the mass/volume percent (m/v) of 24.0 g NaCl in 46.0 mL of solution.
Express your answer to three significant figures.

Part D
Calculate the molarity (M) of 150.6 g of H2SO4 in 1.070 L of solution.
Express your answer to four significant figures.

Explanation / Answer

A) Calculate the mass percent (m/m) of a solution prepared by dissolving 52.18 g of NaCl in 152.8 g of H2O.

% mm = mass of solute / total mas * 100%

mass of solute = 52.18 g

total mass = 52.18 + 152.8 = 204.98 g

then

% m/m = 52.18/204.98*100 = 25.456 %

B)

Vinegar is a solution of acetic acid in water. If a 185 mL bottle of distilled vinegar contains 26.5 mL of acetic acid, what is the volume percent (v/v) of the solution?

Vsolute = 26.5 mL

Vsolvent= 185 mL

Vtotal = 26.5+185 = 211.5 mL

now...

% v/v = vsolute / total V * 100% = 26.5 /211.5 *100 = 12.529 %

C)

Calculate the mass/volume percent (m/v) of 24.0 g NaCl in 46.0 mL of solution.

% m/v = mass of solute / total v * 100%

% m/v = 24 / 46.0* 100%

%m/v = 52.1739 %

D) Calculate the molarity (M) of 150.6 g of H2SO4 in 1.070 L of solution.

M = mol of solute / V solution

mol = mass/MW = 150.6/98 = 1.5367 mol

M = 1.5367 /1.070

M = 1.436
