Question

3. Examine each of the pedigrees below. Give the most likely inheritance pattern for each. Defend your answer by writing a brief explanation as to why your choice is better than other choices?

a.

b.

c.

Explanation / Answer

A) X-linked recessive - we note only males are affected and there is no Male->male transmission, suggestive of X-recessive. B) Autosomal recessive - we note the disease skipping two generations (rules out dominant) and we note male->male transmission of the recessive gene (if you track the disease-free members who pass on the gene), ruling out X-linkage. C) Autosomal dominant - we note the disease in each generation (more likely dominant than recessive) and we note equal involvement of male and female progeny. Hope that helps! Jonathan
