Question
Each of the components of the CH3CO2H equilibrium system you will be studying is clear and colorless. Make sure to read the procedure part of the lab to understand!
Briefly explain how you will determine the effects of the addition you make to this equilibrium.
a. What will you observe if the H3O+ concentration becomes relatively high?
b. What will you observe if the H3O+ concentration becomes relatively low?
c. What will you observe if the H3O+ concentration is in between the concentrations described in b and c above?
Explanation / Answer
CH3COOH <--------> CH3COO- + H+
If H3O+ ion concentration higher then H+ ion concentration increases on the right hand side then equilibrium shifts towards reactants side.
If H3O+ ion concentration lower then H+ ion concentration decreases on the right hand side then equilibrium shifts towards products side.
If H3O+ ion concentration in between high and low concentration then Equilibrium remains constant and do not shift to either side.
