Question

2 7. The reaction A B + C is known to be zeroth-order with respect to A and to have a rate constant of 5.0 × 10-2 mol/(Ls) at 25 °C. An experiment was run at 25°C where [A]0-1.0 10-3 M. Given that the integrated rate law for the reaction is [A] =-kt + [A]o: a. Calculate the half-life (ti/a) for this reaction. b. Calculate the concentration of A after 5.0 × 103 s has elapsed. . Why does an exothermic reaction feel warm? Describe the heat flow of an exothermic process S. Draw an energy diagram for the following endothermic reaction: A-B + C A + B-C

Explanation / Answer

a) For zeroth -order reaction,

         half life = [A]o/ 2k = 1.0 x 10-3 M / ( 2 x 5.0 x 10-2 mol/L/s) = 0.01 s

   Therefore,

                 half life = 0.01 s

b) Given that t = 5 x10-3 s

[A] = [A]o - kt

          = 1.0 x 10-3 M - ( 5.0 x 10-2 mol/L/s x 5.0 x10-3 s)

         = 75 x 10-5 M

[A] = 75 x 10-5 M

Therefore, concentration of A after 5.0 x10-3 s = 75 x 10-5 M
