Lab: Factors which incluence the Rates of Reactions

NOTE: Clean zinc, is zinc "Washed" in a solution of H2SO4

A) What did you observe in the reaction of zinc with the four different acids: HCl, H2SO4, and CH3COOH? what order did the acids react with the zinc? Show these acids in the order they reacted (fastes first to slowest). Was this the expected order? Explain Clearly. The order was H2SO4, HCl, H3PO4, CH3COOH. Yes, the order was expected.   I need help explaining why this order occured.

B) Surface area- you compared the reaction of mossy zinc with zinc granules, which reacted fastest? which had the greates surface area? did these two types (particles sizes) of zinc react in the order you would have predicted prior to the experiment? explain why the granules may have reactred slower? did you notice any change in the apparent rate of reaction once both tubes had begun reacting? If so, why was this expected?. I Need help explianing why the clean zinc reacted before the granules of zinc. Has something to do with cleaning the zinc beforehand i think. why did the moss reacted more slowly.

c) Catalysts: hyrdogen peroxid (3 percent solution) is a reasonably stable liquid if it is kept in a cool dark place and not contaminated. what did you observe when you added the potato extract to one test tube of hydrogen peroxide? what happened when you added several drops of tap water to the other test tube? would you have expected the same reaction had you addded disteiled water? what caused these effects? Explain.Nothing occured at all. What shoudl have happened is the tap water bubbled quickly, while the potato extract bubbled slowly.  Need help explianing why nothing happened, what would have happened if distilled water was added and why it would have happened.

Explanation / Answer

A). The order is -

H2SO4 > HCl > H3PO4 > CH3COOH

This is beacuse the more strong acid reacts fastre with zinc. Among the given acids H2SO4 is the strongest acid and CH3COOH is the weakest acid.

B). Mossy zinc will react faster as the particle sixe of mossy zinc is smaller than the zinc granules. And the more finely divided the solid is, the faster the reaction happens. A powdered solid will normally produce a faster reaction.
