Question
Percent recovery of a mixture.
Hi all so I posted earlier about finding the percent composition of a mixture
The mixture is
Benzoic acid 95.61g
Anisole 243.48g
o-toluidine 296.16g
brought to volume with 2L of methylene chloride.,
which someone answered with this.
mass percent composition = mass of the solute /mass of solution*100
mass of methylene= 2L = 2000ml*1.33 = 2660 grams
density of methylene= 1.33 g/ml
mass of solution = 3295.25 grams
Benzoicacid = 95.61/3295.25*100 = 2.90%
Anisole = 243.48/3295.25*100 = 7.39%
o-toluidine = 296.16/3295.25*100 = 8.98%
in my lab we are supposed to calculate the percent composition of the stock above,
From this info i need the theoretical percent recovery of the 10 mL sample we used and the actual percent recovery of the 10 mL sample
here are the values i got for actual, im confused on what I need to do. pls help
Weight of o-toluidine = 2.11 g
Weight of benzoic acid = 0.05 g
Weight of anisole = 0.16 g
Total recovered mass = 2.32 g
Explanation / Answer
10 ml of the sample solution [methylene chloride solution] * 1.33 g/mL = 13.3 grams of the solution
Benzoic acid is 2.90% of the mass of the solution ==> 0.0290 * 13.3 = 0.387 g = weight of benzoic acid
Anisole is 7.39% of the mass of the solution ==> 0.0739 * 13.3 g = 0.98287 g = weight of Anisole
O-toluidine is 8.98 % of the mass of the solution ==> 0.0898 * 13.3 g = 1.19434 g = weight of O-toluidine
These are the thereotical values of the components of the mixture
while the values in the end which you have for each component are actual values as you said
