Question
The synthetic human is being designed to go into outer space and there are concerns that the internal capacity for carbon dioxide waste might not be large enough. Humans inhale air (source of oxygen) and exhale a mixture of waste molecules (carbon dioxide) into the surrounding environment every few seconds. However, the synthetic human is being designed to hold its waste until it is safe to release it. If the synthetic human creates 0 25 moles of carbon dioxide at a pressure of 0 58 atm and 30degreeC. what volume will be required to contain this gas? If the pressure is suddenly reduced to 0 23 atm at the same temperature, what is the new volume?Explanation / Answer
a) We use PV = nRT equation , R = gas constant = 0.08206 literatm/molK
T = 30C = 30+273 = 303 K
Now ( 0.58 x V) = 0.25 x 0.08206 x 303
V = 10.72 liters is volume
b) P = 0.23 then
( 0.23 x V) = 0.25 x 0.08206 x 303
V = 27 Liters is volume
