Question
Which type of chromatography would be best for each problem of chemical separation or chemical analysis, below? Briefly state WHY the type you chose is best.
a) a mixture of anions
b) a mixture of volatile organic compounds, e.g. short chain ethers and alkanes
c) a mixture of non-volatile organic compounds e.g. organic acids and aldehydes
d) to separate the products of a polymer synthesis by size
e) to quickly determine if an unknown white powder contains a controlled substance
Explanation / Answer
a) a mixture of anions can be separated by anion exchange chromatographic technique. The anions depending upon the adhesion peoperty to the staionary phase will get separated effecienctly.
b) a mixtur of volatile organic compounds can be separated by gas chromatographic technique. The method will be quantitative analysis.
c) a mixture of non-volatile compounds can be separated by using HPLC - pressure chromatography. The use of a combination of polar and non-polar salts would give the right separation between components of a mixture.
d) to separate the products of a polymer synthesis by size, size exclusion chrmotography which is very specific for the separation based on the size of component will be used.
e) TLC which is thin layer chromatographic method is the quickest way to determine If the white powder has controlled substance
