A scientist is studying the transforming protein v-src. Transforming proteins are mutant proteins that can cause cells to become cancerous. v-src is a tyrosine protein kinase, which is an enzyme that adds phosphate groups to tyrosine residues in certain proteins. It is not known which proteins must be phosphorylated by v-src for the cell to become cancerous; however, it is known that v-src must be bound to the plasma membrane to transform cells. To determine which amino acids in v-src are essential for the binding of the protein to the plasma membrane, the protein must be sequenced. Unfortunately, it is difficult to obtain enough pure protein to determine its sequence because vsrc is present only in minute quantities. Therefore, the scientist attempts to sequence the protein from the v-src mRNA transcripts that he has isolated. Below is the sequence of the fragment of mRNA that is believed to code for the membrane binding domain of the v-src protein.
