Question

1-Hematite is an ore of iron that is 69.9% by weight iron. How much hematite would be needed to provide 1500kg of iron?

2-Thr plantium in an automobile catalytic convert is worth about $175. If plantium currently is selling for 984 a Troy ounce, how many grams of plantium does the catalytic converter contain (1 Troy oz=31.10g)

2a-If the destiny of plantium is 21.4 g/cm3,what volume (in cm3)would be occupied by the amount of plantium you calculated in the first part of this question?

3-it is observed that a piece of gold will sink in a pool of luqiud mercury but that a piece of led will float. based on this observation, predict which sample will have the smallest volume: 1.0oz of lead, 1.0oz of mercury,or 1.0 oz of gold.

Explanation / Answer

1)

we know that

mass percent of iron = mass of iron x 100 / mass of hematite

given

mass percent = 69.9

also

mass of iron = 1500

so

69.9 = 1500 x 100 / mass of hematite

so

mass of hematite = 2145.9

so

2145.9 kg of hematite is required

2)

given

rate of platinum = 984 / troy ounce

given

1 troy ounce = 31.10 g

so

rate of platinum = 984 / 31.10 g

rate of platinum = 31.64 / g

now

mass in converter = price / rate

mass in converter = 175 / 31.64

mass in converter = 5.531

so

5.531 grams of Plantinum is present in the catalytic converter

3)

we know that

denisty = mass / volume

keep mass = constant

we get

volume x density = constant

given

gold will sink in mercury

so

density of gold > mercury

also given

lead will floeat in mergury

so

density of lead < density of mercury

finally

density of gold > density of mercury > density of lead

we got

density x volume = constant

so the order for volumes will be the reverse

volume of gold < volume of mercury < volume of lead
