Question

1. The vapor pressure of methanol (CH3OH) at 295 K is 14.40 kPa. What is this pressure in atmospheres?

2. Compressed gas cylinders used in chemistry labs can handle gas pressure up to 2,500 PSI (relative pressure above ambient). What is this relative pressure in pascals? The error interval is 5%.

3. Suppose you have a mixture of oxygen and argon gases that are at equilibrium. What is the ratio of the average speed of the argon relative to the oxygen ? Express the answer as a fraction (e.g. 0.621).

4. You have a mixture of nitrogen, oxygen and argon in a vessel that has a total pressure of 28.7 atm. If the partial pressure of argon gas 4.1 atm, then what is the mole fraction of argon in the container

5.How many moles air molecules (treat as nitrogen) are there in an empty 2 liter soda bottle at 1 atm and a temperature of 45 C?

6.Chlorine is used to disinfect drink water supplies and pool water. Suppose you have 13.8 L of Cl2 in a cylinder at 1000 torr and 24 C. How many grams of chlorine do you have in the gas cylinder?

7.Suppose you have a mixture of nitrogen, oxygen, argon and sulfur hexafluoride gases at an equilibrium at room temperature and 1 atm. If the average molecular velocity of nitrogen is 515 m/s, then what is the average molecular velocity of the sulfur hexafluoride gas? The units are m/s

8.You have a rigid sealed container held at a constant temperature. You add 3.3 atm of oxygen gas, 1.7 atm of nitrogen and 4.2 atm of methane to it. What is the partial pressure of the oxygen gas in the container?

9.Suppose the pressure in your car tires was 45 PSI in Phoenix where the temperature was 110 F. You then drive up to Flagstaff and the temperature is 40 F. What is the new pressure in the car tires in PSI? Assume constant volume and mass. The error interval is 5%.

Explanation / Answer

Please post multiple questions to get the remaining answers, please split the problems and post it as seperate questions

1)

The conversion Factor is

1 atm = 101.325 KPa

Hence the pressure of methanol (CH3OH) at 295 K in atm

=> 1/101.325 * 14.40

=> 14.40/103.125 = 0.142117 atm

2)

The conversion Factor is

1 atm = 14.696 PSI

Hence the pressure in compressed gas cylinder will be equal to

=> 1/14.696 * 2500

=> 2500/14.696 = 170.12 atm

Relative error = 5%

Hence the pressure varies from (170.12 - 5/100 * 170.12) to (170.12 + 5/100 * 170.12)

(161.614, 178.626) in atm

3)

The average speed is inversely propotional to square root of Mass

Mass of argon gas (Ar) = 39.98 gm/mol

Mass of Oxygen gas (O2) = 32 gm/mol

Ration of Speed of Argon/ Ratio of Speed of oxygen

=> (square root of mass of oxygen)/(square root of mass of argon)

=> sqrt(32)/sqrt(39.98) = 0.895
