Question
need help with part b of question I already know the answer to the first one A sample of gas in a balloon has an initial temperature of 44 C and a volume of 1500 L . If the temperature changes to 56 C , and there is no change of pressure or amount of gas, what is the new volume, V2, of the gas? I know the answer is 1560 L the second one has me confused which is What Celsius temperature, T2, is required to change the volume of the gas sample in Part A (T1 = 44 C , V1= 1500 L ) to a volume of 3000 L ? Assume no change in pressure or the amount of gas in the balloon. Express the temperature numerically in degrees Celsius.
Explanation / Answer
T1 = 44 = 317
V1 = 1500 L
T2 = ???
V2 = 3000
Apply ideal gas law ratios:
V1/T1 = V2/T2
always valid in ideal gas
so
V1/T1 = V2/T2
T2 = V2/V1*T1
T2 = (3000/1500)*317 = 2*317 = 634 K
Note that there is a 2x increase of T since Vf = 2 Vi
then
T = 634 K = 361 °C
