Question
Explain the greenhouse effect. List 3 important ("strong" and/or abundant) greenhouse gases. In which level of the atmosphere does the greenhouse effect take place - stratosphere or troposphere? State whether the greenhouse effect is a positive or negative radiative force. An increase in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere causes which of the below? a change in the amount of sunlight reaching the earths surface. a change in the amount of heat reradiated back to earth instead of being lost to space. a change in the amount of heat originally radiated off the surface of the earth.Explanation / Answer
The important green house gases in earth are CO2, methane nitrous oxide.
In the troposphere level the green house effect take place . It is the lowermost layer . This layer contains 75% of the atmospheric mass.
Green house gases trap the radiation and emit it back so these gases are responsible for an increased temperature of our planet. Without green house gases earth temperature would be -18 degree C, so life would be difficult to grow
A increase in green house gases in the atmosphere would cause a change in the amount of heat dedicated back to earth instead of being lost to space. So green house effect directly increase earth temperature by retaining more heat which might have been reflected back and lost in space.
