Question
Name three different abiotic factors that greatly influence vegetation patterns on Earth. As you travel across the United States from west to east along particular latitude during a particular time of the year, the majority of changes in vegetation patterns are due primarily to _______ (Choose either temperature or precipitation) changes. Which side of a tall mountain is wetter - the windward or leeward side? Briefly explain why this is so, and state the name given to this effect. List at least 3 specific processes that influence nutrient availability to producers within ecosystems and designate whether that process is an input, retention or outflow. [Example:Wet deposition -input DO NOT use as one of yours]Explanation / Answer
Answer 11:
Three abiotic factors influencing vegetation patterns are annual precipitation, annual temperature, soil moisture and pH.
Choose - Precipitation because, for example, if you travel form west to east, you find that the western Sierras receive considerable rainfall while the eastern Sierras of Nevada are quite dry. That's because of the precipitation, orographic effect and the rain shadow phenomenon.
It is the windward side that is wetter than the leeward. The phenomenon is called rain shadow. Orographic precipitation causes air on one side to rise, then cool at higher altitudes and cause precipitation. So the leeward side experiences a lot of rain and storms. the other side though experiences what is called the rain shadow effect. The air on the windward side is warm as it descends and so takes up more moisture, making that side wetter than the leeward side.
