Question
For each of the genetic results described below, provide the term for the inheritance pattern that is most likely the cause and provide an explanation for your choice. Choose from: Complete Dominance, Incomplete Dominance, Codominance, Multiple Alleles, Lethal Genes
a) Six of the gerbils in a litter have white spotted fur and 3 have solid coloured fur.
b) 40 plants have red flowers, 41 have white flowers, and 79 have pink flowers. The pink flowers are clearly a lighter version of the red flowers.
c) A blended family has 11 children. The children are the products of two previous marriages. There are four different phenotypes in the children for the same characteristic.
d) A brown coloured cow has had four calves with a white bull. All of the calves have roan coloured hair. (Roan colour occurs when cattle has both red and white hairs in relatively equal amounts.)
e) A grey mare had five foals with a grey stallion. Both horses were heterozygous for grey hair. The foals were all grey except for one that was chestnut in colour.
Explanation / Answer
Case a: This is case for incomplete dominance because the solid colored fur being a dominant shares only 1 part as the ratio of 1:2 between it and white spotted fur. A dominant trait must share triple part than the recessive one.
Case b: it is the case of incomplete dominance because the pink color has produced through the red color. The red color of being a dominant should represent higher percentage than recessive one.
Case c: It is the case of Multiple Alleles because of four different phenotypes. Such phenotypes can produce through combination of multiple alleles.
Case d: It is the case of co-dominance because through the combination of red and white colors, roan color has produced. Co-dominance occurs when dominant and recessive phenotypes express together.
Case e: It is the case of lethal alleles because one of the progenies has died. The dead progeny had chestnut color.
