Question

1. Thermite is a metal powder mixture used frequently in pyrotechnics and metal construction work. It is composed of highly powderized aluminum and iron(III) oxide and when ignited by a high temperature source (such as burning magnesium ribbon), it reacts according to the following equation.

Fe2O3(s) + 2 Al(s) 2 Fe(l) + Al2O3(s)

What mass of powderized Al is required to completely react with 37.0 g Fe2O3? To the correct number of sigfigs please

I want to make sure that I am getting the right anwers, and people have been answering my questions but the answers are not correct. Can who ever works this problem out make sure that the answer is correct. I have a limited amount of submissions.

Explanation / Answer

1. Fe2O3(s) + 2 Al(s) 2 Fe(l) + Al2O3(s)

Mass of Fe2O3 = 37.0 g

Molar mass of Fe2O3 = 159.69 g/mol

Moles of Fe2O3 = 37.0 / 159.69

= 0.23

According to the reaction, 2 moles Al are required to react with 1 mole Fe2O3.

Moles of Al required for 0.2316 moles Fe2O3 = 0.2316 * 2

= 0.46 moles

Atomic mass of Al = 26.9815 g/mol

Mass of Al required = 26.9815 * 0.46

= 12.4 g
