Question

Not much more than 100 years ago, ordinary citizens were unaware of the role of microorganisms in the cause and spread of disease. In her book, "The Gospel of Germs", Nancy Tomes describes the development of our collective cultural obsession with germs. To quote her book, "The rituals of germ avoidance are so many and so axiomatic that we scarcely can remember when or where we first learned them." As awareness of this danger has taken hold, there has emerged a certain societal preoccupation with the perils of microorganisms. Microbes are real, and so some of the phobia originates from facts, but there is clearly more to the phenomenon. Think about the images of microorganisms used in advertisements, and the number of antibacterial products on the market. Write about the negative and positive aspects of this. Can anyone help me with ideas?

Explanation / Answer

Most commonly shown microbes in advertisements are E.Coli, amoeba, pseudomonas aeruginosa, probiotics, etc. The advertisements usually contain antibacterial / antifungal/ anti-amoebic substances in the form of microbicidal solutions, antibiotics, disinfectants, etc.

1. Positive aspects -a. With the increasing awareness among public through advertisements, the spread of diseases / epidemics can be controlled.

b. Probiotics help in restoring healthy bacteria in the gut, thereby, promoting healthy gut.

Negatives - a. Development of resistance in microbes, due to inadvertent/overuse of antimicrobial products, leading to ineffectiveness.

b. The rate at which antibiotic/antimicrobial congeners are being produced is lower than the rate at which microbes are developing resistance. If the same continues, very soon we will again be left with no antimicrobial products leading to diseases/ epidemic.
