Question
a. Boiling water in the water bath
(i) What kind of change did you observe, physical or chemical?
(ii) Give reasoning for your answer above.
(iii) Write a balanced chemical equation for the change.
(iv) If it was a chemical change, identify the type of the reaction.
b. Heating a hydrous salt to obtain an anhydrous salt.
(i) Was it physical or chemical transformation?
(ii) Give reasoning for your answer above.
(iii) Write a balanced chemical equation for the change.
(iv) If it was a chemical change, identify the type of the reaction.
Explanation / Answer
a) Boiling of water in water bath
It is a physical chage because the water is converting from liquid state to gaseous state i.e., vapour state.
H2O (l) -----------> H2O (g) dH = +ve value since energy is required for the convertion of liquid to gaseous state.
b) Heating a hydrous salt to obtain an anhydrous salt
It is also a physical change because the water molecules are seperated from salt.
CuSO4 . 5 H2O ------------> CuSO4 + 5 H2O
Hydrated salt above is blue in colour and anhydrous is colourless.
