What is the molecular formula ? adenine, a component of nucleic acids, has the mass percent composition: 44.45% C , 3.73% H , 51.82% N . Its molecular mass is 135.14 u . What is the molecular formula ?Explanation / Answer
Solution :-
44.45% C , 3.73% H , 51.82% N . Its molecular mass is 135.14 u . What is the molecular formula ?
Lets assume we have 100 g sample then
Mass of C= 44.45 g
Mass of H = 3.73 g
Mass of N= 51.82 g
Now lets calculate moles of each element
Moles of C 44.45g /12.01 g per mol = 3.70 mol C
Moles of H = 3.73 g / 1.0079 g per mol = 3.70 mol H
Moles of N = 51.82 g / 14.007 g per mol = 3.07 mol N
Moles of the all elements are same therefore the ratio of each element is 1:1:1
Therefore empirical formula = CHN
Now lets find the empirical formula mass
CHN = 12.01 * 1.0079 + 14.007 = =27.0249 g
Now lets find the ratio of the molar mass to empirical formula mass
N= molar mass / empirical formula mass
N= 135.14 g /27.0249 g = 5
Therefore
Molecular formula = N*empirical formula
= 5 * CHN
= C5H5N5
