Introductory scenario A 32-year-old male goes to his physician with complaints of a tender, swollen, and red foot. He reports that he noticed the tenderness about 5 days ago after stepping on a fishing hook while on vacation. He treated the sore with antimicrobial ointment and kept it covered for a couple of days. However, instead of the sore healing, he noticed that it developed a large area of redness and that the swelling increased each day. The physician performs an examination on the area and diagnoses the patient with cellulitis, an infection of the deep layers of the skin. Continue to questions Chapter 2 Innate lmmunity

Explanation / Answer

Answer 1: C (As explained below)

Skin keeps away germs from invading our bodies. It is the first physical barrier and line of defense of the body.

Answer 2: C (As explained below)

The neutrophils as per their natural tendency to phagocytose bacteria, phagocytose the neutrophils as well. Once within the neutrophils, the Staphylococci lyse them using their alpha toxins.

Answer 3: A (As explained below)

When they lyse the neutrophils, the Staphylococci are actually destroying the body's cellular defense mechanism. So, they are increasing their rate of infection rapidly by doing this and increasing their population.

Answer 5: A (As explained below)

The increased blood flow causes the redness and the fact that the blood flows there at core body temperature, makes it hot. The increased permeability that causes fluid to leak into the surrounding tissues will lead to swelling in the area, it is not the cause for the redness and heat.
