Question

2.) A homework problem had you calculate the atoms packed in a square and hexagonal array. We will use this information to compute the density of metals later in the semester. Consider a set of atoms stacked in a 3-D structure as shown. It has been suggested that this is the way in which Manganese atoms stack. Look up the covalent radius of Mn. a.) How many atoms of manganese are in a cube that is 1 cm x 1 cm x 1 cm (1 mL)? Look up the atomic weight of Mn. b.) From your results, compute the density of Mn in g/cm?. Argue whether or not Mn crystallizes as suggested

Explanation / Answer

first we have to calculate the avarage mass of one atom

= Mwt/ avagadro no

= 54.938 g mol-1 / 6.023 x 1023 atoms mol¯1

= 9.1213 x 10-23 g/atom

density of the Mn = 7.47 g/cm3 from the text book

now atoms in one cm3

= density / g/atom

= 7.47 g/cm3 /9.1213 x 10-23g/atom

= 8.9816 x 1022 atoms in cm3

second one i am not very sure
