Question

2. The Titanium-Copper phase diagram is shown. a. Label all two-phase fields in the phase diagram below. b. Identify all invariant points and write the eutectic, eutectoid, and peritectic reactions. c. For the temperature-composition 700 deg C and 50%wt Cu, plot the corresponding point on the phase diagram and list the phase(s) present. Use the Lever Rule to determine the composition and mass fraction of each phase present. Phase Diagram Notes (1) The line at approximately 4% wt Cu represents the solid phase Ti2Cu. (2) The right most edge of the phase diagram at approximately 63% wt Cu represents the solid phase Ti3Cu.

Explanation / Answer

a) There are two phases present in the Titanium-Copper Chart as shown in the below table obtained from the diagram

2) There exists one point at 51% wt Cu and 49% wt Ti known as eutectic point, the temperature region for the same is equal to 960C

The reaction will be occuring between Ti2Cu and TiCu

There exists one point at 7.5% wt Cu and 92.5% wt Ti known as eutectoid point, the temperature region for the same is equal to 790C

The reaction will be occuring between Ti2Cu and alpha

There exists one point at 40% wt Cu and 60% wt Ti known as eutectoid point, the temperature region for the same is equal to 1000C

The reaction will be occuring between Beta + L ----> Ti2Cu

Please ask if any doubts and post one more question for the remaining sub-parts since it is a big problem

Overall Composition Phases Present in the Solution Composition of Phases TB1 B/Ti2Cu Xb(Cu) = 0.12 and XCu(Ti2Cu) = 0.42 TB2 TiCu XCu(TiCu) = 0.58
