Question

1)In which of the following aqueous solutions would you expect AgBr to have the highest solubility?

0.10 M LiBr

0.10 M AgNO3

0.20 M NaBr

0.15 M KBr

pure water

2)

Choose the Bronsted- Lowry acids and bases in the following equation:

H2O + NH2- <=> NH3 + OH-

Acids H2O, OH- Bases NH3,NH2-

Acids NH2-,NH3 Bases H2O,OH-

Acids H2O, NH2- Bases OH-,NH3

Acids NH3,NH2- Bases OH-, H2O

Acids H2O, NH3 Bases NH2-,OH-

3)

HCl reacts with both the ammonia and ammonium chloride, so the concentration of both decreases.

HCl reacts with only the ammonium chloride, so the concentration of the ammonium chloride decreases and the concentration of ammonia increases.

Explanation / Answer

1) Choose the Bronsted- Lowry acids and bases in the following equation:

The acid is one which donate protons and base accept protons

H2O + NH2- <=> NH3 + OH-

In this equation water donates proton to form the base OH- ( so water is acid and OH- is its conjugae base)

Also the Proton donated by water is accepted by NH2- to form NH3 ( so NH2- is base and NH3 is its conjugate acid)

Acids H2O, NH3 Bases NH2-,OH-

2) The dissociaiton of the two will be

NH3 + H2O --> NH4+ + OH-

NH4Cl --> NH4+ + Cl-

On addition of HCl

HCl --> H+ + Cl-

So it will increase the concentration of Cl- ( the salt)

The H+ will react with NH3 to give NH4+ hence concentration of salt will increase

The More NH4+ will tend to decrease the dissociation of NH3 to OH- hence concentration of base will decrease

So answer is :HCl reacts with only the ammonia, so the concentration of the ammonium chloride increases and the concentration of ammonia decreases.

3) All have common ion to AgCl so they all will decrease the solubility of AgCl .

However the salt which will produce maximum concentration of common ion will decrease the solubility maximum

BaCl2 : 0.04 M Cl-

NaCl: 0.015 M

AgNO3 : 0.02 M Ag+

KCl : 0.02 M Cl-

so Answer is BaCl2
