Question

Which of the following will increase the cell potential for the following reaction:

2Fe3+(aq) + 3Zn(s) 3Zn2+(aq) + 2Fe(s)

Add solid iron to the system

Increase concentration of Fe3+ in the solution

Add zinc solid

Increase the concentration of zinc ion in solution

Dilute the entire system

Remove water from the entire system

Add solid iron to the system

Dilute the entire system

Remove water from the entire system

Explanation / Answer

We must apply Le Chatelier concepts

First, let us state the Le Chatelier principle which deals with changes in an equilibrium:

The statement is as follows:

If any equilibrium is disturbed, that is, change in conditions such as P,T, concentration, partial pressure, etc.., the system will counterbalance such change in order to favour the system's equilbirium.

The reaction:

2Fe3+(aq) + 3Zn(s) 3Zn2+(aq) + 2Fe(s)

Add solid iron to the system --> Solid Iron is not really in the equilbirium expression, so there will not be an increase in equilbirium

Increase concentration of Fe3+ in the solution --> True, if we want to increase products, we need to increase reactants in order to favour even more production of products

Add zinc solid Increase the concentration of zinc ion in solution --> solids will not increase Q ratio in the equilbirium, since the activity of solids= 1

Dilute the entire system --> The product/reactant ratio is given as

Q = [Zn+2]^3 / [Fe+3]^2

note that dilution will affect much greater in Zn+2, So Q will decrease

which favours Nernst equation Ecell = E° - (RT/nF) x lnQ

So expect more product formation

Remove water from the entire system --> Removing water will increase concentration, as stated before, this will not favour product formation
