Question

2. a)A 1.00 mL. Calibrated pipet was calibrated and found to deliver 1.00 + 0.02mL An analysis calls for four milliliters of reagent to be transferred to a reaction flask. If the analysis requires four transfers using the calibrated pipet, the uncertainty In the final volume of 4.00 ml is: (show your work). b)A similar analysis requires the same four mL, but this time an uncalibrated pipet is used. The pipet indicates t should deliver 1.0OO.02m1. (not calibrated) If the analysis requires four transfers using the calibrated pipet, the uncertainty in the final volume of 4.00 ml is: (show your work).

Explanation / Answer

1. If we look at a simple way the uncertainity with the calibrated pipette will be :

Volume measured = 1+1+1+1 =4mL

we can also calculate the propagation in uncertainity as

Absolute uncertainity = ( (0.02 )2 + (0.02 )2 + (0.02 )2 + (0.02 )2 ) 1/2

So ABsolulte uncertainity = 0.04 mL

2)

The standard uncertainity in uncalibrated pipette will be

= 0.02 + 0.02 + 0.02 + 0.02 = 0.08 mL

so the limit of uncertainity will be: 0 to 0.08 mL
