A. pH = 8.5 , so the solution should be basic , let us calulate concentration of hydroxide ion first
pOH = 14- pH = 5.5
-log [OH-] = 5.5
so log [OH-] = -5.5
Taking antilog
[OH-] = 3.16 X 10^-6
[H+] = 10^-14 / 3.6 X10^-6 = 3.16 X 10^-9
B. Similarly pH = 2.82
-log [H+] = 2.82
log [H+] = -2.82
Taking antilog
[H+] = 1.51 X 10^-3
so [OH-] = 10^-14 / 1.51 X 10^-3 = 6.62 X 10^-12
