Question

please help 1. how would a mixture of naphthalene and benzophenone behave on a TLC plate with hexanes/aceton as the eluent? compare the polarity of these two compounds.
2. outline the most commonly used procedure for the purification of an impure solid material using the technique of recrystallization.
3. why is acceton such a popular solvent? point out one drawback in terms of safety considerations.
4. your final product might be impure since you suspect decomposition might have occurred. When determining the melting point of your product, what are you looking for? please help 1. how would a mixture of naphthalene and benzophenone behave on a TLC plate with hexanes/aceton as the eluent? compare the polarity of these two compounds.

Explanation / Answer

1. The behaviour of any compound on TLC plate depends upon the polarity. Naphthalene being nonpolar as compared to benzophenone will rise high in hexane while benzophenone will rise high in acetone as acetone is polar.

2. Recyrstallization is most common method of purifying solid organic compounds.

The procedure is:

3.acetone is popular solvent due to its structure and hence polarity behaviour. Due to presence of C=O bond it is polar and polar compounds do show dissolvability in it, and at the same time it dissoves non polar compound.

Its boiling point is low so can be removed from the purified compound easilty.

4. A pure final product will be a structure of high molecular symmetry. An decomposition brings assymetrical, ora poorly organized structure. This deviates the melting point of the pure compound.

We expect   a sharp melting point for our final products however due to deomposition or any other impurity we obtain a range of melitng point
