Question
Based on your Lewis structures for the postlab assignment, which molecules below have a three dimensional structure? (Select all that apply.)
A. CO2
B. H2S
C. SO3
D. PCl3 ANSWER
E.CH2Cl2 ANSWER
F. NO2?
WHY IS D AND E THE ANSWERS I DREW ALL THE STRUCTURES OUT AND I UNDERSTAND THAT OF THERE IS A DOUBLE BOND OR A TRIPLE BOND THE 3-D STRUCTURE DOES NOT EXIST, BUT D AND E BOTH HAVE LONE PAIRS AND SO DOES B WHY IS B NOT AN ANSWER IT DOES NOT HAVE ANY DOUBLE BONDS AS THE ANSWERS DO NOT ALSO BUT THE ANSWERS HAVE LONE PAIRS ON THE CENTRAL ATOMS H2S ALSO DOES AND IT IS NOT PART OF THE ANSWER.
Explanation / Answer
The shape of the molecule is depends on the electron-electron repulsion it faces. and each group keep itself away from each other inorder to maintain minimum repulsion between them.(VSEPR theory).
H2S only center atom is having lone pair . and the number of atoms is less so they can keep themself apart from each in a 2-dimensional bend structure
pCl3 (lone pair on P) lone pair -bond pair repulsion is more so they move apart maximum attains 3-d structure) CH2Cl2 number of atoms more they cannot keep themself apart in a two dimension structure so they go for 3-dimensional structure
SO3 also have 4 atoms in it .but it is planar because there is no lone pair on central metal atom . so they can keep themself apart from each in a 2-dimensional trigonal planar structure
