Question

On a hot sunny day, a man was jogging for 3 miles through the forest of Yosemite. The man decides to sit down to get a little rest, because of the hard breathing from the lack of oxygen. As the he sits down on a broke tree trunk nearby and places the hand on the trunk, he notice a slight pain on the tip of his finger. He went to see what it was and a splinter had pierced his finger. Explain what the man's body is experiencing as he is jogging through the forest and when a splinter pieced his finger.

Explanation / Answer

As the man is jogging through the forest, he is experiencing dyspnea or shortness of breath. And when a splinter pierced his finger , the man is most likely experiencing an allergic reaction.

Shortness of breath or dyspnea is described as an intense tighntening in the chest, air hunger or a feeling of suffocation. Extreme temepratures may cause dyspnea. As the man is jogging on a hot sunny day, through the forest of yosemite, he might be experiencing dyspnea as he is jogging .

A splinter is a fragment of a larger object or a foreign body that penetrates or is purposely injected into the body. As the man sits down on a broke tree trunk , he contracted a splinter that pierced his finger. The man complains about pain on the tip of his finger , this indicates that the man has developed an allergic reaction in response to splinter. Allergy occurs when a person's immune system reacts to substances in the environment which are usually harmless.

Some splinters may cause initial pain through ripping of flesh and muscle, infection through bacteria on the foreign object. Feeling of pain initially occurs as the sharp object makes its initial penetration through the body. Others cause severe internal damage if migrated to vital organs or bone over time. If the splinters remain in place they can be removed , but if they migrate and cause further damage, it is important to seek medical attention from a health care provider.
