Question

A proton has a magnetic moment. In a magnetic field, the proton has two states of different energy; spin up and spin down. This is the basis of proton NMR. The relative populations of these two states can be determined if we know the energy spacing between the levels. This energy difference is given by Delta E = Gamma Mu B where Gamma = 2.79 for protons, Mu = 5.05 x 10^-24 .j/Tesla, and, for an NMR like ours, B=1.4 Tesla. (a) Calculate the population probabilities of the two levels at 300 K. (b) Calculate the relative population difference between the two levels at 300 K. (c) Explain how this difference would change with temperature. (d) Calculate the partition function at 100 K, 300 K and 500 K.

Explanation / Answer

delt E=gamma mu B=(2.79)(5.05*10^-24)(1.4)=1.97253*10^-23.
