Question
Zircon, a mineral from which cubic zirconia is made: 34.91% O, 15.32% Si, 49.77% Zr
This is what I got so far:
"O" -> 34.91(1/ 15.999)= 2.4945530908 -> 2.4945530908 / 5454869147 = 4.00116808
"Si" -> 15.32(1/28.085)= .5454869147 -> 5454869147 /5454869147 =1
"Zr" -> 49.77(1/91.224)= .545801105 ->.545801105 / 5454869147 = 0.9994705022
So once this is done, HOW do i know what number to use in order to make these three number complete in order to find out what is the empirical formula???
somone please explain!! thank you!
Explanation / Answer
Your calculations are correct
Now you got O = 4.00116808 = 4
Si = 1
Zr = 0.9994705022 = 1 (apprx)
Simple Ratio of Zr : Si : O = 1:1:4
so Empirical formula is Zr Si O4
