Question
Hi,How would the pKa of the seven amino acids with ionizable side chains change if there is an uncharged hydrophobic amino acid like valine or isoleucine in close proximity of the seven side chains? And why does this happen? How would the pKa be perturbed if there is a Glutamic acid in close proximity? Why?.
I know the seven are arginine, lysine with a positive charge, Aspartic and glutamic acid with negative charge, tyrosine is neutral, histidine can be both neutral and positive (?) and cysteine whose charge I don't know.
I think i don't understand the basic concept of pKA and ionizable side chains. Please help!
Thanks:)
Explanation / Answer
The polarity of the cysteine which is a non poloar compound will effect the pKa of the solution. It will be very negligible, compared to the change done by charged amino acids.
