Question
I'm having a hard time understanding phylogenetic trees. Could someone please help me out with this tree? Also, would the outgroup be #1 on the skeleton tree?
The following matrix summarizes some features of the mudworts and their outgroup, the blue sandwort. Construct a phylogenetic tree for the mudworts and their sandwort outgroup. Based on this skeleton tree, determine the most parsimonious origin of derived character states (minimum number of steps) and the position of the taxa at each branch end. Use all the taxa in the table.
Explanation / Answer
i've recently learnt this my self, let see if i can help you out
for #1, it would be "blue sandwort" since thats the only one with 6 petals... which then seperate 1 from
2-7... at 8 is i think where you indicate that the number of petals change
for #2, it would be "tasty mudwort" since it is the only one that is woody...
blue sandwort is also woody but we are not rly taking that into consideration
at 9 is where you indicate the change from woody to non-woody
for #3, "spiny mudwort" since its the only one blue out of the remaining plants
at 10 you indicate change in colour
for #4 and #5, "sandy and tiny mudwort"
at 11 you indicate that these plants are both harry and that its stems are not succulent
and at #6 and #7, "spotted and stinky mudwort"
at 12 you indicate that these plants are both smooth and that its stems are succulent
i hope this helps
