Question

Hi, Can you show the step process in solving the following word problems with all the above calculations. Thanks.

1) In acid rain, gaseous sulfur dioxide reacts with water vapor to form sulfurous acid (H2SO3). How many grams of sulfurous acid can be produced when 128 g of sulfur dioxide combines with water?

2.) Hydrochloric acid and 50 grams of iron(III) sulfide react. What mass of dihyrogen monosulfide is produced?

3.) How many grams nitric acid is needed to react completely with 25.0 grams of magnesium in a single replacement reaction?

4. When aluminum is heated to high temperatures in air, aluminum oxide is formed. What mass of aluminum oxide will be formed from 32.3 grams of aluminum?

5.) When water reacts with iron metal, hydrogen gas and iron(III) oxide are formed. What mass of water is required to react completely with 100.0 grams of iron?

Explanation / Answer

(1) SO2 + H2O => H2SO3

Moles of H2SO3 = moles of SO2 = mass/molar mass of SO2

= 128/64.064 = 1.998 mol

Mass of H2SO3 = moles x molar mass of H2SO3

= 1.998 x 82.08 = 164 g

(2) 6 HCl + Fe2S3 => 2 FeCl3 + 3 H2S

Moles of Fe2S3 = mass/molar mass of Fe2S3

= 50/207.89 = 0.2405 mol

Moles of H2S = 3 x moles of Fe2S3

= 3 x 0.2405 = 0.7215 mol

Mass of H2S = moles x molar mass of H2S

= 0.7215 x 34.08 = 24.6 g

(3) Mg + 2 HNO3 => Mg(NO3)2 + H2

Moles of Mg = mass/molar mass of Mg

= 25.0/24.305 = 1.029 mol

Moles of HNO3 = 2 x moles of Mg

= 2 x 1.029 = 2.057 mol

Mass of HNO3 = moles x molar mass of HNO3

= 2.057 x 63.10 = 130 g

(4) 4 Al + 3 O2 => 2 Al2O3

Moles of Ak = mass/molar mass of Al

= 32.3/26.98 = 1.197 mol

Moles of Al2O3 = 2/4 x moles of Al

= 2/4 x 1.197 = 0.5986 mol

Mass of Al2O3 = moles x molar mass of Al2O3

= 0.5986 x 101.96 = 61.0 g

(5) 2 Fe + 3 H2O => Fe2O3 + 3 H2

Moles of Fe = mass/molar mass of Fe

= 100.0/55.845 = 1.791 mol

Moles of H2O = 3/2 x moles of Fe

= 3/2 x 1.791 = 2.686 mol

Mass of H2O = moles x molar mass of H2O

= 2.686 x 18.02 = 48.4 g
