Question

you will be measuring sugar metabolism by looking at the amount of ________ that's released by the yeast cells. Consider your answer to the previous question. Explain how you will measure the amount of this substance that's released by the yeast cells. In which part of the apparatus will you place the yeast? Circle your answer. Beaker Flask Eudiometer In which part of the apparatus will you place the sugar? Circle your answer. Beaker Flask Eudiometer Outline the steps for setting up the apparatus for measuring sugar metabolism. Make your outline detailed enough so that you can use it as your sole reference during lab. As part of your outline, talk about the technique for placing the rubber hose into the glass tube (eudiometer).

Explanation / Answer

Answer 5. carbon dioxide release

sugar metabolism by yeast cells will result in production of carbon dioxide. the process is known as respiration.

Answer 6. The amount of carbon dioxide release can be measured using eudiometer. It is an instrument which measures the amount of gases by virtue of water displacement.

Answer 7. Flask

Answer 8. Flask

Answer 9.

The major steps are as follows:

1. Set up the eudiometer tube.
2. Measure out 25 ml of warm tap water (35 ºC) in a graduated cylinder.
3. Add the water to your flask and then measure out specified amount of sugar.
4. Add the sugar to the flask and gently mix for about 1 minute until sugar is fully dissolved.
5. Weigh 1g of yeast. Add the yeast to the flask and swirl gently until the yeast is fully dissolved.
6. Ensure the hose on the stopper is inserted into the eudiometer tube and then place the stopper in
the flask.
7. Start timing and record the CO2 output at definite time intervals.
8. Record your data.
