Question

Good evening, Can you provide me with the net ioninc equations for the following:

1. Sodium chloride and potassium nitrate.
2. Sodium chloride and silver nitrate.
3. Sodium carbonate and hydrochloric acid.
4. Sodium hydroxide and hydrochloric acid.
5. Barium chloride and sulfuric acid.
6. Aqueous ammonia and sulfuric acid.
7. Copper(II) sulfate and zinc nitrate.
8. Sodium carbonate and calcium chloride.
9. Copper(II) sulfate and ammonium chloride.
10. Iron(III) chloride and aqueous ammonia.

Thanks for your continued support.

Explanation / Answer

1) There is none because they cancel out.

2)AgNo3 + NaCl => AgCl + NaNo3 is the simplified reaction

In aqueous solution you will have ions

Ag+ No3- + Na+ Cl- => AgCl + Na+ No3-

The silver chloride, being essentially insoluble, precipitates out as a solid

3) Now consider which of the products is soluble (as in it dissociates in water.) The only one is NaCl! So let's write the total ionic reaction.

2 Na+(aq) + CO3-2(aq) + 2 H+(aq) + 2 Cl-(aq) --> 2 Na+(aq) + 2 Cl-(aq) + H2O(l) + CO2(g)

The species that occur on both sides of the arrow unchanged in the total ionic equation are Na+(aq) and Cl-(aq). We can remove them as they are spectator ions. The net ionic equation is then

2 H+(aq) + CO3-2(aq) --> H2O(l) + CO2(g)

4) Net ionic eqn for aqueous solutions of NaOH & HCl is

H+(aq) + OH-(aq) ----> H2O(l)

Since Na+ and Cl- are spectator ions. They do not take participate in this reaction.

5) Ba+2(aq)+So4_2(aq)===> BaSo4(s)

6)NH3(aq) + H+ (aq) ---> NH4+(aq)

7) Zn + CuSO4 -> ZnSO4 + Cu (molecular equation)

Zn (s) + SO4 2+ + Cu 2+ +NO32-

8)Na2CO3(aq) + CaCl2(aq) --> 2NaCl(aq) + CaCO3(s)

Ionic equation
2Na+(aq) + CO3^2-(aq) + Ca^2+(aq) + 2Cl(aq) --> 2Na+(aq) + 2Cl(aq) + CaCO3(s)
Net Ionic equation
CO3^2-(aq) + Ca^2+(aq) --> CaCO3(s)

9) with the Na2CO3 in the Benedict's solution, it is quite alkaline

add an ammonium salt & you make NH4OH,
which is NH3 in H2O

that NH3 reacts with Cu+2 to make the soluble dark blue complex ion [Cu(NH3)4]+2

complex ion formation between ligands like NH3 & central atoms like Cu+2, is just another name for a Lewis acid/ base reaction

10)

Fe(NO3)3 + 3NH3 + 3H2O -> Fe(OH)3 + 3NH4+ + 3NO3

Net ionic equn3NH3(aq) + 3H2O -> Fe(OH)3(s) + 3NH4+(aq) Spectator ion= NO3-= Fe+3(aq) +
