Question

Good afternoon,

My question is

Momentum before and Momentum after collision should be the same. Is my Math or concepts wrong? The values do not match.

l. A rest observer O sees a 2000-kg car moving with speed 20 m/s. The car hits a 1500 kg-car which is initially at rest. The two car sticks together after the collision. a. Find the speed of the cars after collision as seen by observer O b. Another observer O' is moving with constant velocity 25 m/s relative to O in the direction of the moving car. Find the velocity of the cars before and after the collision by performing the Galilean Transformation c. Show that according to O' momentum is also conserved. Explanation / Answer

a) Applying conservation of momentum

=> Initial momentum = Final momentum

=> 2000 * 20 = (2000 + 1500) * V

=> V = 11.428 m/s

Thus, speed of cars after collision =   11.428 m/s

b)   velocity of first car before collision = 25 - 20 = 5 m/s

       velocity of second car before collision = 25 - 0 = 25 m/s

      velocity of cars after collision = 25 - 11.428 = 13.572 m/s
