toctane Rating Many combustible fuels have been given octane ratings, numbers that determine how suitable the fuel is as a gasoline for automobiles, Regular unleaded gasoline has an octane ratng of89 in tables for reference Fuel additive octane ratng pentane benzene 100 16 18 Part A Big Eds Gas Fammis advertising a new super antiknock gasoline thatisa blend of pentane and ethanol. If ethanol represents 33.0% of the mixture, what is the octane rating of Big Ed'snew gas? octane rating Submit Hints My Answers Give up Review Part Part B This question will be shown after you complete previous question(s) ContinueExplanation / Answer
To "determine the octane ratings ofthe constituent fuels", you have to find the octane ratings ofpentane and ethanol. According to the table, it would be 62 forpentane and 108 for ethanol.
Then, you "multiply each octane rating by the fraction of the finalgasoline represented by that fuel". 33.0% of the mixture isethanol, which means that 67.0% must be pentane. I'll use decimals, because I think they're easier, but you could use fractions toohere: multiply the octane rating of ethanol (108) by its decimal(0.33) and the octane rating of pentane (62) by its decimal (0.67).So, you have (108)(0.33) = 35.64 for ethanol and (62)(0.67) = 41.54 for pentane.
Adding the two together, you get 77.18 for the octane rating.
