PLEASE Can some one help me with this problem!!
Be sure to answer all parts. Asbestos is a fibrous silicate mineral with remarkably high tensile strength. But it is no longer used because airborne asbestos particles can cause lung cancer. Grunerite. a type of asbestos, has a tensile strength of 3.5 times 102 kg/mm2 (thus, a strand of grunerite with a 1-mm2 cross-sectional area can hold up to 3.5 times 102 kg). The tensile strengths of aluminum and Steel No. 5137 are 2.5 times 104 lb/in2 and 5.0 times 104 lb/in2, respectively. Calculate the cross-sectional area (in mm2) of wires of aluminum and of Steel No. 5137 that have the same tensile strength as a fiber of grunerite with a cross-sectional area of 47.4 micro m2. Give your answer in scientific notation to the correct number of significant figures. Aluminum: Steel No. 5137:Explanation / Answer
1 lb/in2=292.639653kg/mm2
let cross sectional area of aluminium = x and steel= y
hence, 2.5*10^4*292.639653*x=3.5*10^2*47.4
x=442.49 micro meter ^2
cross sectional area of aluminium =442.49 micro meter ^2=4.425*10^-4mm^2
and
5*10^4*292.639653*y=3.5*10^2*47.4
y= 221.25 micro meter ^2
cross sectional area of steel =221.25 micro meter ^2=2.212*10^-4mm^2
