Question
2) 181.1 g of SO2 are added to an amount of O2. After the reaction occurs 1.67 moles of SO3 are produced according to the equation,
2SO2(g) + O2(g) ---> 2SO3(g)
a) the moles of O2 reacting?
b) the moles of SO2 reacting?
Explanation / Answer
a) Write balnced reaction
2 C6H14 (g) + 19 O2 (g) ----> 12 Co2(g) + 14 H2O (l)
For 1 mol of hexane is reacted with pure oxygen, O2, -215 kJ of heat is released
for 2 mol of hexane heat released will be 2*(-215) = -430 Kj = delta H reaction
now as per reaction
Delta H reaction = [( 12* delta H Co2 ) + 14 * (delta H H2O) ] - [ 2* ( delta H C6H14) + 19* (delta H O2)]
for delta H O2 = 0 ( element)
put values
-430 Kj = [12*(-393.5 Kj/mol) + 14 * (-285.3)] - [2 * (delta H C6H14) + 0]
-430 = [-4722 + (-3994.2) ] -[ 2 * delta H C6H14]
-430 = [- 8716.2] - [ 2 * delta H C6H14]
-430 + 8716.2 = - [ 2 * delta H C6H14]
8286.2 = - [ 2 * delta H C6H14]
or delta H C6H14 = - 8286.2/2 = -4143.1 Kj/mol
2) As per the reaction 2 moles of SO3 are produced from 2 molesof SO2
or we can say 1 mol of SO3 from 1 mole of SO2
so mole ratio of SO3: SO2 is1:1
therefore 1.67 moles of SO3 are formed from 1.67 moles of SO2(answer)
Now for oxygen
wesee reaction
2 moles of So3 need 1 mole of O2
1 mole of SO3 will need 1/2 mole of O2
1.67 mole of SO3 will need 1.67/2 = 0.835 moles of Oxygen(answer)
1.67 moles of SO2(answer)
0.835 moles of Oxygen(answer)
c) C6H5CH2Cl (l) + 2 KOH (s) + 2 [O] ? C6H5COOH (l) + KCl (s)+ H2O (l)
