Question
Please help me explain why these reactions occur and find a balanced net ionic equation.
1. When 6M NaOH is added dropwise to a solution of ZnCl2, a white precipitate forms which dissolves to form a colorless solution as excess reagent is added.
2. When 6M NH3 is added dropwise to a solution of Zn(NO3)2, a white precipitate forms which dissolves to form a colorless solution as excess reagent is added.
3. When 6M NaOH is added dropwise to a solution of AlCl3, a white precipitate forms which dissolves when 6M HCl is added.
Explanation / Answer
1)
2NaOh + ZnCl2 -> 2NaCl + Zn(OH)2
white precipitate is Zn(OH)2 but then gets in solution as excess reagent is added
Zn+2 + 2
