Question

1) An aqueous solution of calcium hydroxide is standardized by titration with a 0.144 M solution of nitric acid.

If 15.3 mL of base are required to neutralize 26.9 mL of the acid, what is the molarity of the calcium hydroxide solution?

-----> ANSWER:    _______ M calcium hydroxide

2) An aqueous solution of potassium hydroxide is standardized by titration with a 0.123 M solution of perchloric acid.

If 18.7 mL of base are required to neutralize 18.3 mL of the acid, what is the molarity of the potassium hydroxide solution?

-----> ANSWER:    _______ M Potassium hydroxide

Explanation / Answer

1) Ca(OH)2 + 2HNO3 ------> Ca(NO3)2 + 2H2O

Now, Ca(OH)2 & HNO3 reacts in the ratio of 1:2

moles of HNO3 = Molarity*volume in litres = 0.144*0.0269 = 0.0038736

moles of Ca(OH)2 required = (1/2)*moles of HNO3 = 0.0019368

Now, molarity of Ca(OH)2 = moles of Ca(OH)2/Volume of solution in litres = 0.0019368/0.0153 = 0.127 M

2) HClO4 + KOH ----------> KClO4 + H2O

HClO4 & KOH reacts in the ratio of 1:1

Thus, moles of HClO4 = Molarity*volume in litres = 0.123*0.0183 = 0.0022509

Thus, moles of KOH required = 0.0022509

Molarity of KOH = moles of KOH/volume of KOH in litres = 0.0022509/0.0187 = 0.1204 M
