Question

1. The research question is to determine factors that cause people to start smoking. The investigator decides to invite all eleventh graders in her suburban high school and to study those who volunteer. Discuss the stability ( and appropriateness) of this sample for the target population of interest?
2. With the same question above ( notice ages are not specified in the actual research reason question), briefly outline a better study participants option. Make sure you utilize your knowledge of age, gender, ethnicity, environmental factors and anything else that will make this study more relevant and valuable.

Explanation / Answer

Hi Answer:

1.As it is given in question that the researcher did her investigation on the 11th grade students. In generally 11th grade student have age between 15-18 year. This age is very critical stage of life because at this age childhood is almost finished and person start thinking as a mature person, but as I told it is the beginning so students have much more influence of both negative and positive things. They are unable to differentiate what is good and what is bad for them. They just follow their friends and start doing the same things which are already carried out their friends. Second at this stage students try to settle his image different from others so they try to adopt some thing different from common students. According my experience and knowledge the selection of 11th grade student for study is wise step to know the exact cause that why they start smoking.

2. In my point of view as in above question there is no age specification only class information is given, but by the class we can judge the age group of students (as I discussed it may be 15-18 years). This age group is also a good option for study. But in my opinion if researcher select grade 9th students for study then she can get better analysis results because in 9th grade students most of students age varies between (12-15 year) and in this age children’s are much more influenced by the advertisements and other media activities as compared to the 11th grade students. Secondly boys are much more attracted to drugs or smoking as compared to girls, so during studies researcher must divide students in two groups (boys & girls ) and do the analysis. Researcher also compare the surrounding environment of research groups and she again perform her research in urban as well suburban regions. By taking all above factors under consideration she can get more valuable results.
