Question

1. The ratio of the areas of two similar traingles is 4:25.what is the ratio of the length of a side smaller triangle ot thelength of the corresponding side of the larger triangle? 2. two similar polygons have corresponding sides whosemeasures are in the ratio 2:3. If the area of the larger polygon is18 cm2, find the area of the smaller. 1. Explanation / Answer

When it comes to similarity, the relationship goes likethis: linear  a:b          areaa^2:b^2       volume, the units arecubed. In other words, if two triangles are similar and have a scaleof 2:7, their area would have a ratio of 4:49. I squared both values to get the arearelationship. So, to go backwards (from area to linear), I would take thesquare root. So, for question 1) it would be 2:5 For question two, the areas would have a ratio of 4:9. Since the larger polygon has an actual area of 18 (which is twiceour ratio), the smaller one would be twice 4, or 8. Hope this helps!
