Question
Another of the reaction by-products (the grignard reaction: synth of benzoic acid from bromobenzene) is biphenyl. Although you do not use chromatography in the workup for this experiment, you certainly could. Explain in general terms how you could use column chromatography to separate the by-products from the benzoic acid. You dont have to specify exact solvent(s), etc; just discuss the relative polarities, what elutes from the column when, etc. Why do you think you use extraction techniques instead of chromatography? (e.g. length of the lab period..)
Explanation / Answer
Benzoic acid is more polar than biphenyl.
Biphenyl elutes first hydrophobic groups elute first .
column chromatography is really time consuming so we can go for extraction techniques.
