In recent years, many groups have called for using instructional class time to teach curriculum in areas such as values clarification and character building. Traditional educators disagree with these additions, saying that such instruction belongs to the parents and/or the community and takes time away from needed instruction in basic academics. Discuss the value of these added curriculum areas versus an emphasis on traditional basic academics. If you agree that values clarification and character building classes should be taught in schools, what values and/or character should be the model for instruction.

Character building is a method useful for teaching good manners to the children which include helping them develop into a moral, civic, good, mannered, behaved, non-bullying, healthy, critical, successful, traditional, compliant and socially acceptable beings. The six values of character would include: Trustworthiness, respectfulness; responsibility; fairness; caring and citizenship.
The value clarification or character building curriculum should:
(a) Help the kids find a way to tell the truth;
(b) Encourage the kids to take on a challenge;
(c) help them to think about other person's feeling;
(d) help them become generous and affectionate
