Question
Please ansswer detailed and thoroughly
Given a cell that is in a steady state osmotically and whose intracellular electrolyte concentrations are constant with time, it is found that the measured intracellular voltage, Vm, is more negative than the calculated equilibrium potential for K+ . Very strange! Describe a possible pump mechanism to accomplish this. Keep in mind that pump activity results in a steady state distribution of both Na+ and K+ . In the same experiment, the cation concentrations were determined, as shown below. Vm = - 100 mV [ Na+ ]in = 5 mM [ Na+ ]out = 100 mM [ K+ ]in = 100 mM [ K+ ]out = 5 mM
Explanation / Answer
In this case sodiul - potassium ATPase pump can be used which remove three Na ions for every two potassium in. It created concentration gradient for sodium and potasium . however the normal Vm of the cell remain -70 to -90. In increased negativity this Na-K+ ATPase pump will be needed for further transmission across membranes.
