Question

oolprint. Conduct energy efficiency analysis. 3. 2. Relate reduction of carbon footprint to various production methods. 4. Value the significance of the contribution of various compounds to global warming potential. You will work individually on this assignment. All submissions will include a cover sheet and appropriate documentation as required. Write neatly and show all your work to receive partial credit. Be sure to include units for all intermediate and final answers. Problem 1. (20 points) An anaerobic digester from the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in your hometown has a cracked ceiling. In addition to the displeasing odor leaking from the digester, methane (a potent greenhouse gas) is also escaping. The digester normally produces 1.5 metric ton (MT) per day of methane. Before the leak started. 100% of the methane was burned with 100% efficiency. The burning produces carbon dioxide resulting in 4125 metric tons ofcarbon dioxide per day. This efficiency has decreased now: 60% of the methane is now burned with 100% efficiency to carbon dioxide. The remaining 40% of methane escapes out the crack in the digester's ceiling. Assume that when methane is burned, it produces a mass of carbon dioxide that is 2.75 times its original weight. Also assume that methane's global warming potential is 28 times that of carbon dioxide. a. (12 points) What is the digester's new carbon footprint (in MTCE/day)? Be sure to calculate the impact of both methane escaped and methane burned. ·"Digesfr produces metrAfe I Diester Produces meshoe 1.5 mt

Explanation / Answer

a. Methane produced with 100% efficiency=1.5Mt/day

After the burning produces=4.125 Mt/day of CO2

Methane burned=60/100*4.125=2.475 Mt

Methane escaped=40/100*4.125=1.65Mt

CO2 produced by escaped methane=1.65*2.75=4.53

b. Total CO2 produced= 4.53+2.475=7.005 Mt/day

Increase in CO2=total CO2 produced- CO2 produced by burning

=7.005-4.125=2.875 Mt/CO2

Increase in footprint=2.875 Mt/day CO2

c. anaerobic digester captures the methane which can be a potent greenhouse gases if released into the atmosphere. These digester convert the biomas into biogas which is a renewable and clean source of energy and this energy can be utilised in electricity, heating etc. So it reduces the carbon footprint.
